Microsoft Outlook Takes Aim at Google’s Gmail by officially launching Outlook.com this Tuesday after six months of its initial launch marking the demise of Hotmail.

Microsoft is so confident that this email service Outlook.com will be the best of it’s kind and is about to spend at least $30 m illion to sent its message acorss the world.

As part of the process, Microsoft will switch users of Hotmail and and all the other email services operating under different domains such as MSN.com but won’t force them to change their emails to an “outlook.com” adress. It also added that all the users are expected to see the change by the summer.

“All the old messages, contacts, settings, passwords, etc. will be exported to Outlook.com but they will stay the same with no disruption in service”, announces David Law, Director of Product Management, Outlook.com in a blog post. He also revealed that over 60 million people are actively using Outlook in this short period of time.

To keep the old users intact and to welcome more new users, Microsoft is kicking off a large-scale marketing effort around the world to show that Outlook.com can get you going. Microsoft also launched an anti-Gmail marketing campaign earlier this month. The “Scroogled” attacks depict Gmails is a snoopy service that scans the contents of messages to deliver ads related to topics being discussed.

“The Gmail ads are meant to be educational while the Outlook campaign is motivational”, said Dharmesh Mehta, Outlook.com’s senior director.

Microsoft is clearly not shying away from the Gmail comparision. In its press materials the company argues that it’s been nine years since Gmail disrupted the email space and did something basic and offered 1GB mailboxes. “Things are different today that they were in 2004,” Microsoft writes. “We use new communication services, like Facebook, Twitter, and Linkedin and we have a much greater appreciation for well-designed and well-connected systems.”

Microsoft has been trying to catch up with a major makeover of its windows operating system, new smartphone software and a tablet computer called Surface. Like Outlook.com, all those products have been backed by expensive marketing campaigns in recent months.

What do you think of Outlook.com? Do you plan to make the switch from Hotmail before this summer or even abandon the Gmail to go with the outlook? Comment section is yours.
